Our verdict

Scan suits buyers who want one UK store for a machine built to order plus the monitors, headsets and controllers that go with it, with 3 years of cover on its own systems. The trust side scores 9.8, and the 14 day returns window is the number worth holding on to.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Scan builds to order, so a machine can be specified part by part rather than picked from a fixed shelf range.
  • Cover on its own systems runs 3 years, and Scan ranks 1 of 34 brands compared on warranty length.
  • The store spans laptops, gaming laptops, desktops, gaming PCs and mini PCs, so a household can do its computing in one basket.
  • Support runs on email, chat and phone, so a fault on a custom build can be talked through on the phone as well as in writing.
  • Returns run 14 days, which gives room to live with a new build before deciding it is wrong.

Cons

  • Trading is limited to GB, so delivery, returns and warranty claims stop at the UK border.
  • Operating systems listed are Windows and Linux, so a buyer after a Mac or a ChromeOS machine finds nothing on the shelf here.
  • Graphics choices are limited to nvidia, amd and intel, so anyone after Apple silicon hardware has to look elsewhere.
  • Coverage outside computing is thin: cameras top out at 8k video and the drone listings give 23 minutes of flight time on a 126 gram body.

Who it suits

  • UK buyers who want a PC specified to their own parts list instead of a fixed configuration.
  • Shoppers who want a laptop, a desktop, a mini PC, a monitor and a headset from one seller under a single returns window.
  • Gamers who want nvidia, amd and intel graphics options and controllers for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and mobile in the same order.

Who should look elsewhere

  • GEEKOM, whose mini pc and laptop range is the compact computer route when that is all you need.
  • CyberPowerPC, whose laptop, gaming laptop and desktop list is a tighter gaming machine route for a buyer who only wants rigs.

What it does well

Scan builds to order, so a machine can be specified part by part rather than chosen from a fixed shelf range. That is the part of the offer worth weighing against a shop that only sells ready configurations, because the specification follows the parts you actually want. Cover on its own systems runs 3 years, and an extended warranty scheme is available for anyone who wants longer than the standard term. The returns window of 14 days gives time to live with a build before deciding it is wrong, which matters most on custom hardware, where a mistyped part cannot be pushed back onto a shelf. A long warranty and a workable returns window cover the two costs people fear most with a built machine: a fault, and a change of mind.

Who runs it

The company trading as the store is Scan Computers International Ltd, based in the United Kingdom. It was founded in 1986, which puts a long trading record behind the name, and that length of history matters for a shop holding customer money between order and delivery. Support runs on email, chat and phone, so help is available by phone and through a help centre as well as by email and chat. The company is named on its own terms, which is the sort of detail that makes a seller easier to hold to when something goes wrong.

Frequently asked questions

What does a Scan computer cost, and does the price change later?+

Prices are set per product rather than as a subscription, and the entry figure across the store is £48.98. Nothing recurs, so the amount committed at entry is the amount that stands later, with no renewal charge added afterwards. Budget for the machine itself rather than for a cycle of payments.

Can Scan build a computer to my own parts list?+

Scan builds to order, so a machine can be specified part by part instead of being chosen from a fixed shelf range. That suits buyers who already know the graphics card and memory they want. Ready configurations drawn from laptop, gaming laptop and desktop sit alongside it for anyone who would rather take a finished build.

How long is the warranty on a Scan computer?+

Systems carry 3 years of cover, and an extended warranty scheme is available if you want longer than the standard term. On warranty length Scan ranks 1 among 34 brands compared, which is a clear edge over a shop selling a single year.

How long do I have to change my mind on a Scan order?+

The returns window is 14 days, running from delivery rather than from the order date. That is the figure to hold on to when comparing shops, and it matters most on a build to order machine, since a custom configuration cannot go back on a shelf for resale.

Does Scan deliver outside the UK?+

Scan trades in the United Kingdom, and the company sits in the United Kingdom, so delivery, returns and warranty claims are all handled in the UK. A buyer further afield would be arranging their own cover, which is the point to check against a local seller first.

Which operating systems do Scan computers run?+

The listed systems are Windows and Linux, covering the mainstream desktop choice and a free alternative for people who prefer to run their own stack. A shopper looking for a Mac or a ChromeOS device will find the selection limited to those two.

What support can I get after buying from Scan?+

Support runs on email, chat and phone, so a phone call, a live chat, an email thread or the help centre are all open depending on the problem. A build to order machine benefits most from the phone option, since faults are easier to talk through than to describe in writing.

Does Scan sell monitors, headsets and controllers as well as computers?+

Yes. The store covers computers, audio and gaming, with monitors reaching 720 hertz across ips, va and oled panels, and a headset giving 70 hours of battery. Controllers span pc, playstation and xbox, so a PC buyer can add a gamepad in the same order.
